England’s Joe Root back at the top of the ICC’s Test rankings
England must win next week to avoid a third successive away series defeat to Pakistan.
Alastair Cook’s men had needed to break records in Dubai to pull off an unlikely escape act – after being left with 144 overs to save the Test – and fell just 6.3 overs short of doing so after Adil Rashid led a last-gasp rearguard to shred nerves on both sides.
Before tea Riaz bowled Broad to bring Pakistan two wickets closer to the win, but Rashid and Wood carried England to 8-285 at tea with 31 overs remaining to bat for a draw.
Cook was willing on the newcomer to glory, but afterwards didn’t want to mask the problems in the England side – particularly the nightmare first-innings batting collapse.
Bayliss said: “Obviously with Jos Buttler’s wicketkeeping position, it’s no secret he’s been a bit out of form – and he knows he needs runs as well”.
There will be much soul searching for England after another devastating final day.
The partnership with Broad was worth 60 runs, ended only when man-of-the-match Wahab Riaz produced a magnificent 90mph inswinging yorker.
“He is a quality player and is in a position that he is a little unfamiliar with, but he is a guy that wants to do it. For me, somebody that wants to go out there and do it, that’s a guy you want in your team”. We’ve got a really good medical team and they are hard at work and will be badgering me for however many days.
There is no doubt about Buttler’s talent and potential but like Prior, who was dropped by England for the first time after playing 11 Tests, he is finding it difficult to maintain consistency with batting while also constantly working on his keeping.
‘But it’s about the realisation that it’s a tough moment and for 45 minutes you’ve got to suck it up.
“He bowled 90 miles an hour, reverse-swinging, from different angles, with a few short stuff thrown in, so we’re not saying it’s easy and anyone can bat against it”, Cook said.
Misbah admitted it was tense to see the match on the brink.
“You never mean to get out or mess up, and Adil would love to have that shot back – especially given how well he played the other 170 balls”.
Cook had no complaints about Rashid, and also said he hoped to be fit for the third Test that starts next weekend despite an injury scare.
He said: “My body has been pretty good to me over quite a long period of time”.
England’s leading Test wicket-taker, James Anderson, has signed a new deal with Lancashire.
The 33-year-old seamer has penned a two-year contract.
