England’s route to Euro 2016 final could feature Italy, Germany or Spain
First, though, Group C comes to an end with Germany, Poland and Northern Ireland needing only a point to qualify for the next stage. Turkey could know by game time if they can move into a best 3rd team place as the Group C games – involving Germany and Northern Ireland – will be played before the Group D matches.
Italy face the tougher task, but it’s no piece of cake for England either.
Meanwhile in Group F should Hungary beat Portugal it would leave Cristiano Ronaldo’s side on just two points.
The same goes for Hungary in Group F, who now top their group with four points but know that progression is secured even if they drop to third, due to their head to head record against bottom side Austria.
Hungary top Group F with one game to play. Northern Ireland will be happy with four points as it would nearly guarantee they advance in third place.
But the most likely scenario is that Austria and Portugal will both win, since both sides are far too talented to draw another blank at Euro 2016.
But fast-forward to the game’s dying moments, and Nikola Kalinic and Ivan Perisic had struck twice to snatch the group and relegate Spain to runners up.
Who could they play in the quarter-finals? The hosts are probably going to come up against the plucky Northern Irish side in the last 16, and seem likely to have far too much about them to slip up in that one. Spain only needs a win or a draw to clinch first place ahead of Croatia and we like Bellerin to deliver another strong performance as part of a defense core that has yet to allow a goal through the first two games of the tournament. The third-placed team in that group could end up with as few as two points, or as many as four, or quite possibly three (and with a better goal difference than Albania). Turkey have fought hard in this tournament, but Czech Republic get the win.
Beyond that, however, Coleman’s team will reap the rewards that their magnificent labours in Group B earned them.
Finally Slovakia can be certain of playing another match at least after they drew against England on Monday night, also sitting on four points.
