Eoin Morgan prepared to give England T20 youngsters a chance
Bumble is donning a “Choose Tripe” t-shirt, but there is no tripe in the current England T20 outfit, with Bumble saying the side have every chance of winning the World T20 in India next year. At one point, Vince even slog-swept Imran Khan for six, an effort matched by Morgan against Afridi three overs later, as England staged an impressive recovery following their sluggish start.
England are therefore in a hurry to find out as much as possible as quickly as possible, in time for the ICC World Twenty20 next March, about how their own rising stars react to pressure situations. Jason Roy was first to go when, after hitting Sohail Tanvir over mid-off, he clogged the next ball straight to mid-on.
Vince’s demise brought in Billings – playing in place of Buttler – and he did his best impersonation of his fellow wicketkeeper-batsmen by hitting five fours and two sixes in a 25-ball knock, scooping many shots over the stumps behind him.
Jordan remains a key part of Eoin Morgan’s T20 side, though, and impressed during the tour match against United Arab Emirates with two wickets from his four overs. Billings posted a quick-fire 27-run-53, before being run-out on the last ball of the 20th over to Sarfaraz Ahmed. That ensured that Rafatullah Mohmand made his global debut at the age of 39.
India’s spinners again ran rampant as they maintained their stranglehold over the Proteas batsmen with all ten wickets.
Stephen Parry took his first two worldwide T20 wickets and a tough chase became an impossible one when Pakistan went from 74/4 to 74/7 in six deliveries.
“We got told what the team would be yesterday”.
“I’m really excited. I think we have a lot more to offer”.
England, who won the World T20 in 2010, are ranked eighth in the shortest format but coach Trevor Bayliss believes their 3-1 one-day success over Pakistan last week will give the squad good confidence. “It’s always a good sign of a changing room when players who haven’t played all tour come out and perform – I’m really proud of them”.
Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi absolved his bowlers of blame following Thursday’s defeat to England, saying: “160 was a chaseable total”. That was a chaseable total, but we batted very poorly.
“If you get an opportunity, you’ve got to take it”.
