EPA And VW Mum On Meeting Of Leaders Amid Emissions Scandal
Mueller told The Associated Press after a speech to workers at Volkswagen’s lone USA plant in Chattanooga on Thursday that he understands frustration in the pace of finding a fix.
Volkswagen vehicle owners in the United Kingdom driving models affected by the diesel emissions cheating scandal will not be receiving payouts from the German automaker, it has been confirmed.
Yet Mueller continued to describe the discussions as productive.
The California Air Resources Board said the proposals did “not adequately address overall impacts on vehicle performance, emissions and safety”. He said, “We made a default, we had a… not the right interpretation of the American law”.
Volkswagen has two main options in trying to bring its diesel cars into compliance. But the chemical treatment, while saving acceleration and mileage, needs a clumsy storage tank and multiple hardware changes to work.
VW has admitted using what is known as a “defeat device” in 11 million cars and vans globally.
“I don’t want to get ahead of any decision”, he said.
“With the KBA, the Germany federal transport authority, we have an agreement and we have a solution and that is what we’re getting on with”.
This is Mueller’s first visit to the U.S.as head of the company.
The UK boss of VW said that the “fix” devised to clean up some 1.2 million vehicles in Britain would not affect fuel consumption.
However, Mr Willis said U.S. owners were going to have to wait even longer to have their models repaired by VW, hence the goodwill payment.
Volkswagen is placing great hope in the new midsized SUV that the Chattanooga plant is scheduled to begin producing at the end of the year.
Mueller took the helm of what had become the world’s No. 1 automaker after his predecessor resigned amid revelations of the emissions cheating scandal a year ago. He pledged to pay more attention to the USA market.
