Eradicating Zika-spreading mosquito is proving difficult
“This CDC funding provides real-time data about the Zika epidemic as it unfolds in the United States and territories and will help those most devastated by this virus”.
On Friday, Florida Governor Rick Scott announced the first four cases of the Zika virus transmitted by mosquitoes in the continental United States were found in Miami, Florida.
CDC officials said they could not remember another time in the 70-year history of the disease-fighting agency when it told members of the public not to travel someplace in the US.
In response to the Florida Department of Health’s (FDOH) recent finding that cases of the virus were likely contracted through a mosquito bite in a one-square-mile area of Wynwood, a neighborhood north of downtown Miami, the University is escalating its proactive actions.
Men can transfer the virus to women through sex, health officials said.
All 14 cases are thought to have occurred in Miami’s Wynwood arts district, a trendy, fast-gentrifying neighbourhood of warehouses, art galleries, restaurants and boutiques.
The CDC also said expectant mothers should get tested for the virus if they have visited the neighbourhood since mid-June.
“He said nothing hurts; he doesn’t have any pain”.
“On the streets of Wynwood, where the virus was locally transmitted, reaction about the virus is mixed even among those who should be most concerned”, Valencia reported.
Zika infections in pregnant women can cause severe brain-related birth defects.
The state is taking the threat seriously, according to Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state health Commissioner Howard Zucker, who briefed reporters on the latest Zika statistics Tuesday in Manhattan. The birth defect is characterized by an abnormally small head and is associated with serious developmental delays or sometimes death. “We’re just the front of it”, Scott said during a news conference. “I did not know they can transfer the virus through sperm and carry it from six to eight months”.
