Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has said he seeks no change to the decades-old status quo at the holy compound, which is also revered by Jews as the site where two biblical temples once stood. Jewish ultranationalists have been pushing the Israeli government to allow Jewish prayer on the compound outside al-Aqsa.

The basic criticism of the Netanyahu government by the Left (what’s left of it) is that the prime minister and his even more hawkish colleagues aren’t doing enough to help bring about the so-called two-state solution.
Hanan Ashrawi, Executive Committee member of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said in a news briefing in Ramallah that “another generation of Palestinian young men and women, born under occupation and enduring its ruthlessness and cruelty, have again engaged in popular resistance to send a clear message to Israel and the world”.
