Escape Artist Hospitalized After “Near Drowning” During Stunt
In an effort to promote the tour of “The Supernaturalists”, a troupe of illusionists organized by Angel – the Harry Houdini of his generation – Horsman was secured in a glass box filled with water hanging from a crane on Livingston Avenue, according to spectators, including former Home News Tribune reporter Mary Ann Bourbeau.
As part of the promotion, Horsman performed a stunt known as the “water torture cell”.
An escape artist suffered a magic mishap after almost drowning from locking himself in a water tank.

Blite said the performer had chains and 16 locks on him.
This being done, a crane hoisted the box up a story or two in the air, and then spent the next couple of minutes picking away at the locks.
“First he was chained around his neck and arms, with handcuffs around his arms and legs”, Handel said, adding that the only objects Horsman was able to take into the box with him were a rubber band and a bent piece of wire – presumably to unlock the bars and cuffs. He was reportedly conscious and transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
The police that assisted at the scene claimed that Criss had told them Horsman’s transport to the hospital was all “part of the act”, but Angel himself quickly dispelled these claims in a news release.
The Las Vegas Sun billed the stunt as “death-defying” in a piece posted online Monday. “Thank you for your thoughts and prayers”, said Criss.Angel in a statement released by the theater.
“We look forward to four exciting shows this weekend with Spencer Horsman and the rest of the Supernaturalists”, said Brian O’Boyle, State Theatre vice president of programming and marketing.
