ESPN’s Herbstreit apologizes to Baylor for fake injury claim
Midway through the fourth quarter of Saturday’s Big 12 showdown between Baylor and Oklahoma, Bears safety Terrell Burt went down with what Kirk Herbstreit, on air, called a “bush league” flop. Social media and news outlets erupted with accusations that Baylor’s coaching staff had drawn up a fake injury ploy.
His sprained right ankle wrapped in a bandage Monday, safety Terrell Burt was still being quizzed about allegations he faked an injury in Saturday’s loss to Oklahoma. Burt and Reid were clearly trying to give their defense an extra minute or two of rest as Oklahoma had just converted a crucial first down after Baker Mayfield was dragged down from behind on a horse collar penalty.
“I’d like to apologize to [Baylor football and] Terrell Burt. Last [night] I thought he had faked an injury and I was DEAD WRONG”, he tweeted.
“I saw what I saw at the time and didn’t realize he had tweaked it earlier”.
Herbstreit posted the apology Sunday in a series of three posts on his Twitter account, saying he took “full responsibility” and wanted to “apologize sincerely”. He attempted to fake an injury, but he did it in the most obvious way possible. “If they saw the whole thing, it would be “different”. The Sooners went on to win, 44-34.
