Estrada’s no-hit bid broken up by Red Sox in 8th
Estrada’s no-hit bid was abruptly ended by a solo blast from the bat of Chris Young in the eighth inning, which sparked the Red Sox offense, but it was too little, too late in a dramatic 5-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. “They swing the bats and got some big hits for them”. Estrada would lose the no hitter when Chris Young came to the plate and hit a solo home run to the Monster.
The righthander issued a third walk to open the second inning, but got two infield pop outs and a ground out to get out of the inning.
“Always good thoughts”, Gibbons joked about his mindset during the ninth-inning meltdown. I love the fact that our guys don’t ever quit. Estrada has walked three and struck out four Sunday.
He walked Mookie Betts and Pedroia to lead off – the first time he has walked the first two batters of a game – but a bunt by Xander Bogaerts came right back to Estrada, who threw out the lead runner at third base. “I don’t think about those things”.
For 7 1/3 innings, the Red Sox failed to record a hit off of Toronto starter Marco Estrada.
“Obviously if it happens, it will be really nice”, Estrada said.
Toronto tagged Red Sox starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez (L, 1-1), making his second start of 2016, for five runs on four hits in 5.2 innings, hammering the 23-year-old for all four home runs while walking four times and resisting the urge to strike out even once.
Right fielder Jose Bautista made a running grab on Ramirez’s drive to end the seventh. All of five runs scored on the long balls. “Most of us will need the use of it to get our body well rested”.
In the bottom of the ninth, Pedroia led off with a double to left that knocked Estrada from the and Ortiz drove him in on a double to center off Osuna.
Ortiz, 40, entered the day leading the majors in RBI and raised his total to 53, helping Boston snap a three-game losing streak. He seemed to only be leaning on his fastball and the Jays pitchers were waiting for it. Rodriguez’s pitching line for the night was 99 pitches, 5.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 3 BB and 0 Ks.
Toronto received contributions from both ends of the batting order in staking an early lead.
The right-hander walked three, struck out four and retired 19 straight before Young homered over the Green Monster in left field.
Barney, the No. 9 hitter, hit a solo homer in the third that preceded Encarnacion’s two-run shot later in the inning. In three starts against Boston this season, Stroman has pitched 16 1/3 innings and allowed 26 hits and 18 earned runs.
Red Sox: C Ryan Hanigan (neck strain) and LF/C Blake Swihart (sprained left ankle) were placed on the 15-day DL after getting hurt Saturday. OF Rusney Castillo, RHP Heath Hembree and C Sandy Leon were brought up from Triple-A Pawtucket. RHP Noe Ramirez was optioned to Triple-A.
Josh Donaldson returned to the lineup as the designated hitter after extensive treatment with head trainer George Poulis Saturday and before the game Sunday. Donaldson was held out of the lineup Saturday, but was available to pinch hit…. Darwin Barney moved from SS to 3B with Ryan Goins playing SS and the Jays still without disabled SS Troy Tulowitzki (quad).
The Sox will have Monday off before embarking on a odd road trip next week, as they will travel to San Francisco for a rare two-game Interleague set.
