EurAsia Cup captains named
Davis Love III and Darren Clarke, respective captains of the US and European teams for the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine National in Minnesota, said on a conference call that it was important for the biennial event to showcase why the sport is widely known as a “gentleman’s game” based on fair play.
It will be a good introduction to team captaincy for the Northern Irishman, who is sure to face a rowdy crowd when battle lines are drawn with the Americans in 12 months’ time.
Feherty Live, to be broadcast on the Golf Channel tonight, provided a night to remember for the appreciative audience as Feherty, himself a Ryder Cup player in 1991, brought his own unique style into play in getting a behind the scenes insight from the captains.
And, ahead of the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club tournament, Clarke admits there will be a friendly rivalry when he takes on the 43-year-old Indian star. “I’m looking forward to going up against Darren – I’m going to have a lot of fun with him!” He wants to make this next team.
“The EurAsia Cup is going to give me a great opportunity to see a lot of potential Ryder Cup players in a match play and team situation”. But I think we will have our players ready. “You may not think that from the way he’s been scoring, but the stats are actually very good”.
I just hope I can get a great team out there and keep them calm and collected and get the best out of them. The match-play format will be followed, during the tournament.
“On the positive side, I can focus more on the European Tour and the Ryder Cup, and I’ll feel more at home”, said the German when asked about losing his PGA Tour playing rights. The last time it was held in America, at Medinah in the Chicago suburbs in 2012, Europe rallied from 10-6 down on the final day to beat a USA team captained by Love. “What Suzann did was correct in the rules of golf but in the spirit of the game was wrong”. The proposal didn’t materialize in time for lawmakers to add it to a new state budget, but Dayton said he would be willing to consider legislation next year to absorb a few security costs tied to the Ryder Cup.
“But first and foremost we want to go there and win the EurAsia Cup. We will be hungry to win”. But we’ll handle it as gentlemen and a sportsmanlike way. “Believe me, Jeev is going to have a very strong team so hopefully the guys from Europe will be up for the fight”.
