Europa League: Man United wins 1:0
Manchester United head coach Jose Mourinho is set to rest a few first team footballers for Sunday’s English Premier League game as the Europa League semi-final second leg against Celta Vigo is on the horizon.
Celta looked more unsafe after the break and they nearly carved the Red Devils open when Wass was given too much space in the final third, allowing him to pick out Iago Aspas in the box, but the former Liverpool striker’s diving header did not connect.
The win boosted United’s hopes of reaching the final and, ultimately, securing a place in next season’s Champions League, although missed chances, a feature of the Old Trafford club’s campaign, irked former Chelsea manager Mourinho. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves just because Marcus Rashford hit a good free-kick.
“I think we were in control”.
Celta have already overcome losing the first leg 1-0 at home on their run to the last four with a 2-0 win at Shakhtar Donetsk in the last 32.
‘We will attack them there. We’re keeping our chances, it’s not over.
“At the end of the day it’s a set-piece that gets us”, said the Swedish worldwide.
Meanwhile, Marouane Fellaini admitted he had to “control himself” after picking up an early booking against Celta Vigo just a week after seeing red in the Manchester derby.
“In the past month of April, we played nine matches – seven of them in the Premier League and we had too many problems, we had too many players absent”. They don’t know it, but when we’re on the field and hear them shouting our names, it pushes us to the limit.
Celta created the first opportunity of note, Nemanja Radoja’s inswinging cross headed poorly wide by an unmarked Daniel Wass from six yards. And then repeat it again next Thursday (in the second leg).
He said: “It’s not so easy to control the game against this team, they score nearly every game”. But it remains to be seen whether all of them would get to play on Thursday.
“The players that have accumulated lots of minutes are not going to play next weekend”, said Mourinho.
‘We need to play more quickly and we need to do what we are good at.
United midfielder Ander Herrera hailed the defence for keeping a clean sheet on the night.
“So for me, no problem at all and I think he will be very, very pleased with me that I am going to change my team to play against Arsenal, so I think he’ll be really happy with me!” It’s possible that Alvarez was expecting the left footed Daily Blind to take the free kick and the Celta keeper was slightly out of position as the youngster’s effort went in at the far post.
