European leaders: climate change deal can’t be renegotiated
Ellie Johnston, who leads climate and energy efforts at Climate Interactive, a nonprofit group based in Washington, D.C., echoed similar views, stating that although most major countries have emphasized their commitment to the Paris Agreement regardless of what the USA does, “there may be reluctance to put forward stronger pledges if the U.S.is not doing its part”. “We represent about 1.3 per cent or 1.4 per cent of the world’s emissions and if you count up all of those countries who have emissions production under 2 per cent, that makes up 40 per cent of the total worldwide emissions profile”. He, I think, told both Cardinal Parolin and also told Prime Minister (Paolo) Gentiloni that this is something that he would be taking up for a decision when we return from this trip. In conversations with his advisers, Trump has cited the affect a withdrawal would have on the states where he won by the largest margins, including in the Rust Belt and the western plains.
Opponents of the Paris agreement also say imposing regulations to reduce carbon emissions is too costly. He wrote, “Pittsburgh stands with the world & will follow Paris Agreement”. In it, the former president warned that the USA would risk missing out on the economic benefits of being a part of the Paris agreement. Climate change is unstoppable.
In a joint statement, Governor Andrew Cumo, Governor Edmund Brown Jr., and Governor Jay Inslee announced the formation of the United States Climate Alliance.
Bannon pushed Trump to carry out his vow to “cancel” the agreement while Ivanka Trump lobbied her father for weeks to remain in the agreement, anxious about possible diplomatic repercussions from pulling out of an accord only two other countries, Nicaragua and Syria, don’t accept.
Meeting that goal would have required the U.S.to cut its emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping greenhouse gasses – moves that Trump said would wipe out the jobs of millions of Americans. “They’re going to withdraw USA participation in the treaty”.
Cook is not the only business leader to have expressed disappointment or disagree with Trump’s decision. The U.N. body that handles climate negotiations said the accord could not be renegotiated based on the request of a single nation.
I fully support @POTUS‘ decision on the #ParisAccord. “The U.S.is already leading the world in energy production and doesn’t need a bad deal that will harm American workers”, it read.
CEOs from Apple, Facebook, and Google all urged President Trump to support the pact before his decision.
But a number of other business leaders derided it in forceful terms.
Yesterday, Musk said he worked hard to convince Trump to stick with the accord. Now that it’s been announced Trump will pull out of it, the aftermath could be catastrophic.
Am departing presidential councils.
Now it may fall even further behind, analysts say, even though Trump touted the withdrawal as an “act in America’s interest [that] won’t matter much to the climate”.
As a matter of principle, I’ve resigned from the President’s Council over the #ParisAgreement withdrawal.
Mr Trump’s announcement comes less than 18 months after the historic climate pact was adopted in the French capital, the product of a hard-fought agreement between Beijing and Washington under Mr Obama’s leadership.
Last fall, Obama hailed the agreement as a “turning point for our planet”.
“The Paris Agreement provides the right global framework for protecting the prosperity and security of future generations, while keeping energy affordable and secure for our citizens and businesses”, May told Trump by phone, it said in a statement.
Obama said Trump’s decision reflected “the absence of American leadership”, but that he was confident that USA cities, states and businesses will fill the void by taking the lead on protecting the climate.
The president could also announce that he will begin formally pulling out of the accord outright a process that would take three-and-a-half years under the standard cooling-off period for new global treaties.
