European record number of people with HIV
In sub-Saharan Africa, seven in 10 infections in 15-19 year olds are among girls, with about 70% of them not using condoms during sex.
People who have HIV on medication have a life expectancy that is no different than someone who doesn’t have HIV. Only 1 in 3 of the 2.6 million children under the age of 15 living with HIV are on treatment. Latinos – 17 percent of the US population – account for 21 percent of the new HIV infections. And if we are to feel secure in the gains we make, we need to ensure together that health systems are ready to confront their next challenges as well as the ones they face now.
But there was a 48 percent increase among European migrants, or people originating from a European country other than the country where they were diagnosed.
ECDC acting director Andrea Ammon advised Europe to “scale up its efforts to reach out to this group”.
Still, the numbers do show that progress is being made.
In the Virgin Islands there are approximately 1,200 people living with HIV. When refugees and migrants are victims of social exclusion in receiving countries, they are at greater risk of HIV infection, and this may lead them to engage in risky behaviour, increasing their risk for infection. This risk is exacerbated by inadequate access to HIV services and fear of being stigmatized.
Children born with the virus were dying in their teens because there was not enough treatment aimed at adolescents, McClure said.
World AIDS Day is of paramount importance as it reminds the public that HIV has not faded away – in fact, the virus is on the rise, particularly in communities of color.
In observance of World Aids Day on December 1, World Vision is carrying out a number of activities to highlight the importance of HIV awareness and prevention.
Of the 651 cases, 60 had developed into full-blown AIDS. With new targets at the global level and new federal leadership in Canada, now is the time to renew our own HIV response and catch up with the rest of the world.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that women are significantly more likely to receive antiretroviral therapy (ART) for the treatment of HIV. One such approach would be to increase the funding and spending on HIV/AIDS-related strategies, which would be used for research; the implementation of widespread HIV testing services for early diagnoses; and the free distribution of contraceptives and ARV drugs, as well as easily accessible health care for mothers and children.
Currently, it is estimated that only 51% of people infected with HIV know their status. There needs to be adequate support including active involvement of the communities so that those identified can be enrolled into ART which should aim for higher retention and better health outcomes and viral suppression.
