Everett Golson: Golson impresses with four scores in debut
But on Saturday night, the Seminoles showed that was a distant memory.
Everett Golson looked as if he had been running Florida State’s offense for three years instead of less than three months. “Ball got here out of his arms very nicely”, Fisher stated.
Fisher informed each player individually of his decision, and Fisher said both players reacted how they thought they would.
“I know coach Jimbo wanted to get him settled in”, Cook said. FSU appeared to be more physical and sent waves of defenders out on the field to successfully slow Texas State’s up-tempo attack, which amassed just 300 yards of total offense.
“I was proud of our guys. We’ve gotta get those things fixed”. When you play a team like this, that can happen.
Golson then threw his second touchdown – a 13-yarder to tight end Ryan Izzo – to make it 35-10 with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter.
He seemed to be the incumbent to the position, and started as the first-team quarterback in FSU’s spring game in April. Golson was 6-for-11 for 90 yards in that game.
Tyler Jones finished 16 of 25 for 100 yards and 10 carries for 39 yards with no touchdowns and no turnovers.
“We didn’t turn the ball over and had one penalty tonight”. The Seminoles though have an easier opening game compared to the past couple seasons. Last season Texas State switched to an up-tempo offense and it was successful.
GETTING PRESSURE: Florida State’s biggest concern defensively is upgrading its pass rush. Kicker Roberto Aguayo capped the scoring with a 22-yard field goal with 2:18 left.
Florida State junior WR Bobo Wilson against Texas State senior CB David Mims.
Florida State mainly kept it on the ground in the first half, running on 23 of 32 plays.
“We put up 59 points”. Texas State, on a fourth-and-8, picked up a first down off a fake punt. White was replaced on special teams after that. Fisher said sophomore RB Dalvin Cook would not be under any playtime restrictions despite missing most of preseason drills.
“I don’t think the delay hurt us”, Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione said.
FSU pushed it to 21-10 by halftime with a one-yard run from Mario Pender with 5:44 left. He passed just five times in the first half, but after the intermission, he completed 12-of-16 passes for 228 yards. Cook was found not guilty of misdemeanor battery on August. 24 and returned to practice the following day.
“It didn’t catch us off guard”, Woodard said of FSU’s pass-happy strategy in the second half against Texas State.
But ultimately, Golson’s athleticism and his ability to keep plays alive with his feet adds another dimension to FSU’s offense Fisher could not resist. The Seminoles won their first 13 games last season – including a controversial 31-27 victory over Golson and the Fighting Irish – before falling to Oregon 59-20 in the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Rose Bowl after winning the BCS national championship in 2013.
