Every Chipotle in the USA will be closed for lunch Monday
The Mexican fast food chain will be closed until 3 p.m. ET Monday for an employee meeting meant to address food safety practices at the company.
The company said more than 50,000 employees tuned in via satellite in more than 400 viewing locations, including theaters.
Ells during the meeting with the employees said that the accumulated funds would go in assisting the local farmers offset the prices of new food tests and safety protocols.
Chipotle is hoping the meeting results in “a really excited and motivated group”, Chipotle CFO John Hartung said last week on an earnings call.
Executives believe the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will soon declare the E. coli outbreak to be over. Profits plunged 44 percent in the fourth quarter compared to the year before and the company is launching a major marketing campaign to win back customers.
Chipotle didn’t say how many burritos it will give away, but advised that quantities are limited and will be distributed on a “first come, first served” basis.
The restaurant is offering customers a free burrito to those who text “RAINCHECK” to 888-222.
The CDC announced earlier this month that the E. coli outbreak “appears to be over”. Once you do that, you’ll get a coupon for a free burrito within the next few days.
As part of the subpoena, Chipotle was asked to show documents relating to a norovirus outbreak in August at a Simi Valley restaurant.
The popular chain’s image was significantly damaged after more than 500 people in 13 different states got sick after eating Chipotle food.
“With all of the Chipotle news, with the bacteria, I am excited that they are taking proactive measures for whatever is wrong”, Adkins said.
In the meantime, Chipotle has said it does not plan to slow down its rate of new store openings.
