Everything You Need to Know About the Third Day at the DNC
President Barack Obama on Wednesday implored Americans to help Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump, warning the 2016 race was not just about politics, but the nature of USA democracy.
Clinton did not mention the controversy that lingers over her use of a private email server to conduct sensitive government business while she was secretary of state.
Chelsea Clinton addresses the Democratic National Convention, sharing stories of what she’s learned from her mother, Hillary. But Obama’s work on Clinton’s behalf, and the intensity of his effort, will be at least as important.
Duckworth, an Iraq war veteran who lost her legs in combat, took on Trump’s readiness to be commander in chief, saying “I didn’t put my life on the line to defend our democracy so you could invite Russian Federation to interfere with it”. I hope, sometimes, I picked you up, too.
“The richest thing about Donald Trump is his hypocrisy”. Obama rejected that portrait.
“There are a lot of people here that aren’t delegates who are standing and clapping and cheering for somebody that we aren’t ready to believe in”, said Day.
Obama also called out our would-be dictator-in-chief by saying that Americans “don’t look to be ruled”. We battled for a year and a half.
Hillary Clinton will formally accept her party’s nomination for president on Thursday night, as the Democratic National Convention comes to a close.
Even Trump did his part, albeit inadvertently, with his urging of Russian Federation to hack Clinton’s emails landing like an unexpected gift in her lap.
Bill Clinton’s reaction after Obama spoke: “Loved it”.
Obama, with his scandal-free White House, attractive family and careful, thoughtful nature, may not have been a ideal president, but for many black Americans, he was ours.
Obama, whose wife, Michelle, gave Clinton a rousing tribute at the convention on Monday, is scheduled to deliver his 30-minute speech at 10:30 p.m. EDT (0230 GMT on Thursday).
“They offered no solutions for the problems facing America – in fact, they pretended those problems didn’t even exist.” the statement said. That’s her personality and that has hurt her in this campaign and in politics, because people want to know you. “Bonds of trust and respect are fraying”, she continued.
As a few other speakers did, Obama acknowledged Clinton’s shortcomings as a candidate. “I ask you to carry her the same way you carried me”, Obama said. “That’s what happens when we try”. Clinton’s name has been met with boos and jeers from die-hard Sanders supporters, and Bernie or Bust protesters continue to surround the convention hall. Obama declared Clinton not only can defeat Trump’s “deeply pessimistic vision” but also realize the “promise of this great nation”.
A major goal of the Democratic National Convention is to humanize Hillary Clinton, to make voters like her. He tried to transfer all that energy, all that “four more years” wistfulness in that room, to Clinton. “But I was filled with faith, faith in America”. After all Obama was the outsider who snuck in and took the nomination she thought would be hers in 2008. Every seat in the house is full. The contested Senate seats then were in states he’d lost twice.
To the frustration of Democrats and Republicans alike, Donald Trump’s most consistent position-perhaps his only consistent position, actually-throughout this ludicrous campaign season has been his refusal to release his tax returns. But Obama will appear in multiple swing states for Clinton – likely in separate rather than joint appearances. He may also visit Democrat-friendly swaths of red states including Nebraska and Utah.
In the biggest speech of her more than 25-year-old career in the public eye, Clinton will sound the themes that will propel her campaign against Republican Donald Trump in the November 8 election.
