Ex-college hoop star from NJ found slain in Brooklyn
Wright was reported missing from Bergen County, N.J. According to neighbors in the Midwood neighborhood, the Lexus had been sitting on the street since Sunday. He most recently played with the Cholet Basket club in France. Wright, who was drafted 39th overall by the Knicks in 2001, was initially reported missing by his NJ roommate two days earlier. Investigators say he had a suspicious wound on his head and the medical examiner confirms this case is now being investigated as a homicide.
He was drafted by the NY Knicks in 2001, but was waived before the start of the season.
“We are in disbelief”, he said.
Previously, he starred at Farragut Academy in Chicago with Kevin Garnett and Ronnie Fields on what the Chicago Sun-Times called “one of the best in IL history”.
Nelson said Wright’s mother told him on Wednesday morning that her son was dead, but that she did not know the details and was preparing to fly to the NY area.
Details are slowly coming out, but the Daily News cites police sources saying Wright might have been murdered by a man he met on a gay dating app.
Wright never made it onto the Knicks’ roster, and had been playing overseas in Europe for the past several years.
Wright was born in Chicago and played three years at the University of Arizona under legendary coach Lute Olson.
“Loved Michael”, Pastner said.
