Ex-cop in court on murder charge for 2013 on-duty shooting
A former Virginia police officer was formally charged with second-degree murder on Monday in connection with the 2013 shooting of an unarmed man in the doorway of the man’s home.
The Fairfax County courtroom has been cleared as a medic treats Torres, Smith reports.
He is accused of wrongfully shooting and killing 46-year-old John Geer in a standoff stemming from a call about a domestic dispute in 2013.
In late July he was fired from his position, citing “a personal matter”, and on Monday Torres turned himself in and was indicted.
Former Fairfax County police officer Adam D. Torres is shown in this police department photo released on August. 17, 2015. Geer’s family criticized the county for stonewalling the investigation, and the long delay prompted congressional scrutiny of the police department’s actions.
The county paid $3 million this year to settle a lawsuit filed by Geer’s family.
WTOP’s Max Smith, who was in the courtroom, for the hearing says the medical emergency involving Torres occurred after his bail was denied.
