Ex-Oklahoma City Cop Daniel Holtzclaw Sentenced To Maximum 263 Years
On Thursday, a district judge sentenced him to 263 years, in line with what jurors recommended. Although hope wasn’t lost, many were skeptical of the newly sworn in and appointed Oklahoma County judge and former police officer Timothy Henderson’s ability to remain unbiased during sentencing.
“Police say that Holtzclaw was able to prey on women in a minority, low-income neighborhood in northeast Oklahoma City”.
According to Yahoo News, the former police officer filed the request late Wednesday through his attorney Scott Adams.
“We needed to get the right people here for the testimony to be provided to the court to address Mr. Holtzclaw’s issues as to new trial and new evidence”, Gieger said. “If he was a true law enforcement officer, he would have upheld his duty to protect these citizens rather than victimize them”.
“I was out there alone and helpless, didn’t know what to do”, said Annie Ligons, who spoke with reporters after the conviction and described what happened after a traffic stop with Holtzclaw.
Holtzclaw sexually abused multiple women between December 2013 and June 2014, targeting victims from a poorer, mostly African-American area of Oklahoma City, prosecutors said. Holtclaw, 29, had been charged with 36 counts. After threatening to arrest them for possession of drug paraphernalia or outstanding warrants, Holzclaw forced the women to have sex with him.
All of Holtzclaw’s victims were black women that he stopped while on patrol.
Another victim, Sherry Ellis, told the court she never thought a police officer would do what Holtzclaw did.
Sentencing was delayed temporarily as Holtzclaw’s defense team argued for a new trial, claiming that prosecutors withheld evidence that could have helped their client. Thirteen women accused the former officer of sexual assault, and six of those women accused him of rape. One victim said Holtzclaw raped her while she was handcuffed to a hospital bed, and another woman, who was 17 at the time, said she was raped on her mother’s front porch. In states that do decertify officers, reporting requirements vary, but the AP’s findings suggest that sexual misconduct is among the most prevalent complaints against law officers.
