Ex-prosecutor to spearhead investigation into Flint water
The investigation will seek to determine whether any government officials committed any crime in connection with a massive water contamination crisis that has left the city of Flint’s water undrinkable.
Kilpatrick’s venting appeared in the form of a letter republished on a supporter’s Facebook page in which he knocks Gov. Rick Snyder. The tainted water in Flint – and the government’s failure to provide timely information about it to the public – is a human rights disaster.
Matt Damon lambasted Republican Gov. Rick Snyder over the Flint, Mich. water scandal during an interview Sunday, saying the governor should be ousted after “a fair trial”.
The Snyder administration has said drinking water regulators failed to correctly interpret the federal Lead and Copper Rule and require corrosion controls in the Flint River water. Monthly water bills in the economically depressed city run $140 a month, and city officials have already said that not being allowed to raise water rates and put liens against those who don’t pay their bills would bankrupt the city. Snyder said in his State of the State address last week: “This crisis began in the spring of 2013, when the City of Flint voted 7-1 to buy water from the Karegnondi Water Authority”. The governor declared the emergency because the contaminated drinking water poses a serious health risk to the residents of that area.
Curt Guyette, an investigative reporter for the Michigan ACLU, writes in the Daily Beast about a previously undiscovered deposition given by a man named Jerry Ambrose in a civil case related to the health care benefits of Flint’s retired municipal workers.
Because of economic issues, Flint went into a state of emergency and was turned over to a state manager in 2011. The City of Flint has actively pursued using the Flint River as a temporary water source…
Another leader of the group, Dave McKellar, said his militia members have been delivering water door-to-door with the American Red Cross over the past week, and an additional 50 members would’ve been at the rally if he hadn’t told them to spend their time distributing water.
Anyone who drank city tap water was exposed to lead, but children are more susceptible to lead poisoning than adults.
Krol also stated that he didn’t see the crisis enveloping the mostly minority community as a matter of race.
According to published reports, preliminary results do show that the lead levels are dropping since Flint has switched back to Detroit water.
The Hollywood actor condemned local officials for failing to rectify the problems in Flint sooner as residents have not had clean running water since 2014, when officials made a decision to draw from a river which has tested positive for lead.
“We’ve created this complex, no responsibility regulatory system, where the federal government, the state government, a regional government, local and county governments are all pointing fingers at one another”.
