Ex-SU coach Shafer hired as Maryland DC
On Wednesday, Durkin announced the hiring of four assistant coaches, including former Virginia coach Mike London and former Syracuse coach Scott Shafer.
Shafer, who was sacked by Syracuse two weeks ago, went 14-23 in three seasons with the Orange. The two shared a staff at Stanford in 2007 when Shafer was defensive coordinator/associate head coach and Durkin was special teams coordinator/defensive ends coach.
Shafer brings previous experience as defensive coordinator from his time with Northern Illinois (2000-03), Western Michigan (’05-06), Stanford (’07), Michigan (’08) and Syracuse (’09-12).
Durkin became Maryland’s coach last week after serving as Michigan’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach this past season.
While it is not certain what position London will have on Maryland’s staff, it is being speculated that he will be an Associate Head Coach and defensive line coach.
He previously coached the defensive line at Virginia (2001-04) and with the Houston Texans (2005).
London resigned from Virginia in November after finishing 4-8 in his sixth season leading the Cavaliers.
As the head coach at Richmond (2008-09), London nabbed 24 wins and led the Spiders to the FCS Championship in his first season. Abdul-Rahim is regarded as a top recruiter in the area, and reportedly played a significant role in getting four-star wide receiver Trevon Diggs, the younger brother of former Maryland star Stefon Diggs, to verbally commit to Alabama.
