Ex-Trump campaign manager Manafort found guilty of 8 charges
Juror Paula Duncan gave a behind-the-scenes account to Fox News on Wednesday, after the jury returned a guilty verdict against the former Trump campaign chairman on eight financial crime counts and deadlocked on 10 others.
A judge declared a mistrial Tuesday on 10 other counts the jury could not agree on.
Cohen’s attorney Lanny Davis says Trump ordered his client to make hush-money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy model Karen McDougal to keep them quiet about alleged affairs, which he argues makes the president similarly guilty of a felony.
At a courthouse close to Washington, jurors deliberated on whether the president’s former campaign chair Paul Manafort – a man who was instrumental in him winning the Republican nomination – was guilty of a separate slew of charges.
On the right hand side of the form, which the jurors filled out during their deliberations, the jury wrote “No Consensus” and “G to N, 11 to 1” next to the 10 counts that hung, the form released Thursday shows.
“This clearly is crossing the line if it, in fact, happened”, Manafort attorney Richard Westling told Ellis, indicating that the juror had abandoned Manafort’s presumption of innocence.
The jury said Tuesday morning that it was stuck on at least one of the 18 counts against Manafort, though they did not mention on which charges they were at a standstill.
“This pardon is not something being discussed in the White House and the president has not made a decision on pardoning Paul Manafort or anyone else”, she said in a statement. Giuliani also clarified in his follow-up call to The Post that his conversation with Trump was a general discussion about potential pardons for a range of people under investigation, including but not limited to Manafort.
The defense team has suggested it may appeal or ask for a new trial, although Downing told reporters after the verdict that Ellis had ensured Manafort received a fair trial. The president has not revealed his thinking but spoke sympathetically throughout the trial of his onetime aide. They were unrelated to the core of Mueller’s investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation to subvert the 2016 USA presidential election in Trump’s favor.
Prosecutors said Manafort laundered $30 million, money he made working for government officials and political leaders in Ukraine, via a network of hidden offshore bank accounts back to the US without paying taxes and subsequently obtained $20 million in illegal loans. Though Kushner responded to Manafort’s email by saying, “On it!”
After the jurors declared that they had reached an impasse, the judge declared a mistrial on seven bank fraud counts and three counts of failure to disclose foreign bank accounts.
Manafort decided not to put on any witnesses or testify himself. Gates said he did so at Manafort’s direction, Gates said, also admitted to embezzling “several hundred thousand” dollars from Manafort. Prosecutors had initially asked the judge not to make the discussion public because of Mueller’s ongoing probe.
According to the transcripts, the complaining juror, a woman, heard another juror say: “I don’t believe the defense has … much of a case. they don’t have much to present or to refute what’s already occurred”.
The trial in Alexandria, Virginia, is the first of two for Manafort.
Manafort will face a new judge and jury in another trial in September on charges that include obstructing justice and failing to register as a foreign agent.
