Ex-unpaid intern sues Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s company
Based on lead plaintiff Shahista Lalani’s interview with Page 6, it sounds like the problem rests with the company itself, and not with MK+A, who Lalani describes as “really nice people”.
Alleging she did the work of three interns, Lalani stated in her suit that she was once hospitalized for dehydration. I was talking to (my supervisor) all day, all night. Yikes. She alleges that during her 50-hour work weeks she did the similar duties to those of a paid employee but was not compensated accordingly. Different interns have cried. It’s also accusing them of not granting interns school credit for their work.
According to the New York Daily News, Lalani said in the court documents that her responsibilities included inputting spreadsheet data, tech sheet creation, running personal errands for paid employees, organizing materials, cleaning, photocopying, and sewing. I’d just be sweating to death.
“[But the head technical designer] was very demanding. They’re business people”, she said of the Olsen twins.
The suit contends the interns should have received minimum wage plus overtime because they were doing the same type of jobs as the paid colleagues. “Emails at nighttime for the next day, like 10 p.m.at night”.
When approached with questions about the lawsuit, a Dualstar spokeswoman said the company was not yet aware and declined to comment on its intern program. “They have been by no means imply to anybody”. Among different issues, it makes movies, books, cosmetics and garments.
“I always looked at myself, even as a kid, as a businesswoman”, added Ashley.
