Experts Say No Legal Barrier to Donald Trump Releasing Taxes
Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump slammed 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney Thursday as ” one of the dumbest and worst candidates in the history of Republican politics”. Fresh off of getting chased around the arena by a couple of lions, Donald Trump tried to explain to CNN’s Chris Cuomo why the IRS audits him so routinely, the excuse he gave during the debate for not releasing his tax returns.
“As far as my return, I want to file it, except for many years, I’ve been audited every year”, Trump said.
“I’ve been audited every year, 12 years or something like that”, said Trump, because this is a very good reason to elect someone as president of the United States. It may require a caveat that the returns could be modified after an audit, but tax returns aren’t held under lock and key during audits – and previous years certainly could be released.
Mr Trump says he will release his tax returns – which he says “are extremely complex” – eventually, amid calls to do so from his rival, Texas senator Ted Cruz.
“The only thing you have really is a debate and those are possibly the least predictable factors in this race in terms of how they affect Donald Trump”, Weigel said in the video.
“All I know, I can’t imagine Romney having the gall coming after anybody’s returns”, Reid said in the article. – Mitt Romney. And while it’s tough to top Trump’s beef last week with Pope Francis, this one’s got some nice undertones. “They’ve been complaining about it for a long time”, Trump replied.
An audit by itself would not prevent Trump from releasing his tax returns.
In an interview immediately following the debate, Trump suggested the IRS was targeting him because of his faith. “Either he’s not anywhere near as wealthy as he says he is, or he hasn’t been paying the kind of taxes we would expect him to pay”. “The audit process is handled by career, non-partisan civil servants, and we have processes in place to safeguard the exam process”.
While not citing Trump by name, the IRS also disputed the businessman’s suggestions that he is being audited for political reasons or because he is a Christian. “He got some publicity today”, said Trump. But Thorndike said tax attorneys he’s spoken with are generally sympathetic to the desire not to make tax returns public while they’re being audited.
“I suppose it could take a little time, but not much”, said Bankman.
Mr Cruz, Ohio governor John Kasich and Florida senator Marco Rubio have all vowed to release their tax returns soon.
