Extra-alarm fire at Old Town building from the 1800s
Part of the roof of the building which houses offices for Second City has collapsed and fire officials say the offices have been damaged.
Firefighters are battling an extra-alarm blaze in the Piper’s Alley building in Old Town, which includes a couple stages for the Second City comedy troupe.
The Second City’s Chicago Mainstage has been located on North Wells Street in Old Town since its inception in 1959, and it moved to its current address at 1616 North Wells in 1967. The theater tweeted that all faculty and training center campers were safely evacuated from their building, and all shows are canceled Wednesday night.
The fire started in the stove area of the kitchen of the Adobo Grill on the first floor and traveled through the vent to the roof, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. Two firefighters and another person were transported to local hospitals in stable condition; one firefighter had a shoulder injury and another reported not feeling well.
