FA chairman Greg Dyke says sorry for England’s miserable Euro 2016 exit
Glenn, vice-chairman David Gill and technical director Dan Ashworth will lead the search for a new manager but outgoing FA chairman Greg Dyke has questioned why anyone would be interested in taking charge of England. “The most important thing we have now is to qualify for the next World Cup”.
“It is not 24 hours since we got knocked out of the tournament”.
“I’m sure that these players will get better and better”.
The Northern Irishman was appointed as the new manager of Celtic only at the end of last month, and is exclusively focused on the Scottish Premiership club, who are continuing preparations for their upcoming Champions League qualifier with a friendly against NK Celje in Slovenia.
The FA would be prepared to wait for an ideal candidate to complete a contract elsewhere, with the interim manager overseeing the qualifiers for Russian Federation 2018 in the meantime.
“In response to the recent media reports, I’d like to say that [suggestions senior players lost faith in manager Roy Hodgson are] completely untrue”, Rooney said.
“So would you rule him out?” I’m not longer a part of it.
The former Liverpool manager still has plenty of admirers within the FA, with the title-winning Leicester City manager, Claudio Ranieri, also likely to be considered.
“I call them the “Academy Generation” because they have come through in an era when footballers have never had more time being coached”, he wrote.
Hodgson’s contract was due to expire after the tournament and following the match in Nice, he read a pre-prepared statement at his post-game press conference in which he said that he would not be seeking to continue.
“We have some potentially very good footballers in that group and I just feel potentially that Glenn might be the one to take them forward”.
But who do you believe should be the next England manager? That is what you would look for.
“If you said, this person is an absolute shoo-in, can you wait, then we are well placed with an interim solution”.
The 45-year-old Southgate had an unremarkable spell as manager of Middlesbrough but is perhaps best known for missing a spot-kick in the Euro 96 semi-final penalty shoot-out defeat against Germany. “There is not much more I can say on the subject”.
Former England player Ray Wilkins has said he would like to see Glenn Hoddle land the vacant manager’s job.
“He’s a good listener and he has time for everyone whether you are the best player or the least member of the squad”.
Hodgson rejected the accusation that the job had become “impossible” and was optimistic for the team because of the young players coming through.
