Facebook Adds Free Games Like ‘Pac-Man’ to Messenger App
Seventeen games-including arcade classics as Space Invaders and Pac-Man as well as more modern games like EverWing and Words with Friends: Frenzy – can now be launched directly from your News Feed, rather than forcing users to dig them out from the left-hand sidebar.
So, are you ready to start saying goodbye to productivity having fun on Messenger? Tapping a post that contains the “Instant Play” call-to-action will immediately launch it without the waiting time and storage consumption of installing a new app.
So how can you play these? You and your friends will even be able to compare scores on the leaderboard. They can also play solo.
Instant Games can be embedded within posts on Facebook – like this one – which can appear in people’s news feeds. Also, users will be able to find games to play alone.
Now these Instant Games are provided to 30 countries.
The company has previously experimented with games on mobile by hiding basketball or soccer mini games that launched when sending a specific emoji to a friend. “The focus of this publishing fund is to allow us the flexibility to work with other studios, IP holders, and companies looking to enter the HTML5 messenger gaming market”.
Created to keep you chatting and playing, the games feature threaded convos, leaderboards, contextual chat, and other fun stuff.
Developers such as Bandai Namco, Konami, and Taito are all now included in the 17 titles available for gameplay, while a full list of said titles can be found below for your reference.
She noted a headache Instant Gaming could give developers – it requires “cutting-edge knowledge of HTML5 and Java script, which is very tough for most of the developers today”. While there’s no cost attached to play, there may be some form of monetisation in future, though this may be at each game publisher’s discretion.
After playing the game, people will be shown a screen displaying their score and a camera icon that, when clicked, will show them a screenshot of the game with their score that can be shared to Facebook.
This is part of Facebook’s multi-pronged gaming strategy, says Gartner analyst Brian Blau. “Gameroom is, of course, a desktop experience, this is more of a mobile experience”.
“Currently, if you turn on encryption, the options you have are more limited”, Marcus continues. If so, were you the one sending me all that FarmVille spam? It’s just that now, the feature is out and available to use.
Countries set to benefit from Instant Games this early stage include: Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Great Britain, Canada, United States, Japan, Netherlands, Australia, Austria, Latvia, Germany, Ireland, Belgium, New Zealand, France, Singapore, Finland, Hong Kong, Russian Federation, Estonia, Taiwan, Slovenia, Puerto Rico, Cyprus, Israel, Lithuania, Spain, and Italy. “That’s why we built it the way we did, rather than have it turned on for every conversation”. Facebook promises “many more to come” though isn’t letting slip what other studios it’s working with.
