Facebook briefly banned the phrase ‘Everyone Will Know’ on their website
According to Facebook’s Melanie Ensign, a member of its security communications team, the phrase was being blocked as part of a glitch with the company’s spam filter. “We’re constantly updating the rules used by our spam-fighting engine and this particular phrase erroneously got caught in the mix”.
Facebook’s spam filter problem was also discussed by dozens of people on Reddit after user system_requirements claimed they were unable to use the phrase in a status update or when commenting.
The Facebook glitch that wasn’t letting users type “everyone will know” extended beyond just public posts.
Also, it has now been confirmed by the Huffington Post that the phrase can now be posted.
Users complained they had trouble sending it via Facebook private message.
Upon entering the phrase, netizens were given a message saying that the message has been blocked. So, why would Facebook ban this seemingly innocent phrase? Conspiracy theories started popping up everywhere and people were wondering if Facebook is trying to censor its users or if Zuckerberg was trying to control what can and can’t be posted. Another user replied that they also were unable to post the phrase as a status. After Roman Polanski had a few sexual abuse charges brought against him users tried to expressed their views on the matter online but found that Facebook’s spam filter was blocking posts relating to Polanski or the case. Though the first time we sent “Everyone will know” the message appeared to go through, on subsequent attempts the phrase was blocked.
However, there’s no way of knowing for sure, for the apparent “everyone will know ban” because Facebook keeps its cards close to its vest when it comes to this sort of thing.
