Facebook Reactions Get a New Look for Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary
All you have to do is hover over the Like button on a post and those reactions should boldly go where no Like button has gone before.
It was on a Thursday night, September 8th, 1966 on NBC that creator Gene Rodenberry introduced us to the 23rd century exploits of Captain James Tiberious Kirk and his crew on the Starship Enterprise.
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, Facebook has released a new custom series of Like buttons for fans of the show. Spock, shockingly, expresses emotion as the “Wow” icon. “Love” has been turned into a Vulcan split-finger greeting, the “Haha” face has a Captain Kirk hairdo (sadly there is not enough detail to imply a toupee), “Wow” gets the Spock treatment, “Sad” looks like Geordi La Forge from The Next Generation and “Angry” has the ridged brow of a Klingon.
Readers: What are your thoughts on Facebook’s temporary profile picture frame and Reactions for Star Trek’s 50th anniversary?
“Star Trek'” showed a utopian future for the universe in which a cast of worldwide fictional characters, including Americans working side-by-side with Russian and Japanese characters in the middle of the Cold War, featured exploration rather than fighting, as well as peace between not only the people of earth and aliens, like the Vulcan character Spock, but also among races on Earth itself.
The Reactions are not widely available just yet, but they appear to be rolling out throughout the day.
Over the past three decades, additional “Star Trek” TV series aired, including “The Next Generation”, “Deep Space Nine”, “Voyager” and the upcoming series “Star Trek: Discovery”, premiering in January.
“This project has truly been a labor of love”.
