Facebook tests tags for profile page
Facebook is in the process of testing out a new feature on some user accounts that allows you to tag your profile with things you are into. First spotted by The Verge, these profile tags allow friends to describe your personality, with no limits on what they tag. The profile owner must approve any tags that friends add before they are shown to others.
When friends add tags to a profile, the user is notified of the tags and if declined, the tags disappear forever.
The users will receive a notification prompting them to accept or decline their tags.
Tags are free-form, which means the users can type in anything they want, even including emojis.
When asked by the tech blog whether this was real or some kind of optical illusion, Facebook answered, “Profile tags are a creative tool that lets you and your friends add tags to your profile to highlight the things that describe you and what you’re into”. Or you could just ignore the notification (cough, just like you do with certain friend requests), and the tags will remain pending, visible only to you and the friend who tagged you. For example, one Facebook profile included tags like “Designer” and “Unbreakable”, and also “Rockstar leggings” and “Plays hearthstone'”. The tags appear to work the same way as LinkedIn’s tabs so if you’re already familiar with the feature, then this shouldn’t really be too steep of a learning curve.
There’s no word yet on when Facebook will be testing or rolling out the new profile tags elsewhere.
