Fairfield schools ‘secure’ following threats that forced all 17 into lockdown
Fairfield’s private schools are also in a lockdown now too, NBC Connecticut reports.
Officers responded, shut the street down, checked all the houses and determined there was no such address. Police said they believe this was a swatting incident.
Police said there were multiple anonymous threats of violence made, which were about bombs and a possible gun.
A school threat to Holland Hill Elementary School involved a man saying that he was coming down with an M-16.
At 9:27 a.m., one of Fairfield’s two public high schools received a call from an unknown man who indicated he was heading to the school with a gun.
“(W)e don’t know if the Black Rock Turnpike thing is used as a diversion, or whether it was just in fact part of the plan”.
Police Chief Gary MacNamara said at a news conference Friday that all children are safe. The police have been unable to confirm the threat at this time, but they are taking them seriously. “The schools immediately went into lockdown, an emergency management team formed and opened up the EOC”. Surrounding communities including Easton, Norwalk, Westport and Seymour sent police and firefighters to assist, given the scope of the response. State resources from several agencies were on standby in case their assistance was requested, Governor Dannel Malloy said.
“We’re asking parents to wait outside and we will bring the children out to them as opposed to perhaps going into the office and signing them out”, school superintendent Dr. David Title said.
Fairfield police said they’re working with the FBI to investigate leads on who could have made the calls.
About 50 parents stood vigil outside Fairfield Warde High School as district buildings were held in lockdown for hours as authorities investigated.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and other area police departments are investigating the threats, which constitute potential acts of terror, according to MacNamara.
As a result, all schools were locked down.
