Fake News on Facebook Engages More People Than You’d Think
Did people share stories even when they were sure they weren’t true?
Facebook is arguably the most influential news source in the country.
But a few days later in a post, he acknowledged Facebook has begun to look into ways for the online community to flag hoaxes and fake news.
Indeed, it was reported that more than 200 United States newspapers endorsed Mrs Clinton while fewer than 20 endorsed Mr Trump. You can also use fact-checking sites such as Snopes, Factcheck.org, and PolitiFact. Shortly after creating it, I set it to be visible to the general public. What the audience ends up seeing on Facebook is determined by who their friends are and what they share.
And by coincidence, fake news was in the real news, too. It’s because Facebook has become a platform for the sort of fake news stories that helped elect Donald Trump. Even if Facebook can’t vet each article posted, the loss of ad revenue could damage the livelihood of those fake sites.
Many stories – such as “Trump claims Ricola made Hillary a cough drop that clears up cough and makes her deadly assassin” – are clearly fictional.
In the meantime, I’m leaving Facebook. The last time I checked, which was Thursday evening, it had been shared about 25,000 times.
Though hyper-partisan fake news stories have come from both the left and the right, Facebook entrepreneurs know that the money is in plowing the Trumpian fields.
The Facebook employees, who spoke with BuzzFeed News on the condition of anonymity, said they were not taking sides in the election, but advocating that Facebook not favor any candidate through the dissemination of fake or misleading information.
This has led to criticism of both companies, with some accusing Facebook in particular of being a major platform of misinformation, so much so that it swayed the U.S. presidential election. WARNING! nazi GOOGLE and FACEBOOK will be making authoritarian decisions on which sites are “real news” sites. More than 100 news sites that made up pro-Trump content have been traced to Macedonia, according to a BuzzFeed News investigation.
A version of this essay was originally published at Tech.pinions, a website dedicated to informed opinions, insight and perspective on the tech industry. I could lie and they’d still eat it up.
If Facebook or something similar had not existed, would Trump be going to the White House? I love the Onion, for example, and believe it often serves an important political objective. Horner said he thinks a lot of other misinformation sites should disappear, but sees himself as indulging in an art form of sorts. He blamed a pervasive willingness among Trump supporters to believe and pass along anything they were told. “I’ve never seen anything like it”. But in reality, MSNBC was not on the list at all.
Read Horner’s full Q&A with The Washington Post over here. I’m glad they’re getting rid of them. But a fake-news site does not need you to stay for long. I don’t just write fake news just to write it.
It’s another thing entirely when the new-media giants on the block are conduits for fakery and enablers of false and often destructive realities.
Studies show a significant portion of the population distrusts “the media”.
However, Zuckerberg added, Facebook has also found that people are less inclined to click on links or otherwise check out shared stories that did not line up with their views.
