Fake ‘SNL’ movie trailer, ‘The Day Beyoncé Turned Black,’ is on point
In the video, we see news reports taking about Beyonce‘s new song, with some reports stating that Beyonce was “embracing her black heritage”.
Not only did her video stir up some discussion, but her Super Bowl performance featuring and her presentation reminiscent of the Blank Panthers got lots of opinionated comments. Beyonce made Coldplay an afterthought during the Halftime show with a bit of help of Bruno Mars.
If you’ve been rolling your eyes at all the recent controversy over Beyonce’s groundbreaking “Formation” video, you’ll definitely appreciate Saturday Night Live’s send-up of the mass freakout. This is what the SNL crew perfectly picked up in the clip below. I won’t spoil the greatness that is “The Day Beyoncé Turned Black”, but it essentially points out the absurdity of white fragility.
“I think… Beyoncé…is black!” one of the characters tells her husband, who seems shocked and frightened by the news.
“‘Hot sauce in my bag, swag, ‘” says a confused Beck Bennett.
“Maybe this song isn’t for us”, another employee says, looking alarmed.
“We have to go”. Many of them, it seemed, couldn’t wrap their minds around the concept of a black woman proclaiming her identity loud and proud. It’s a heightened spoof of egregiously ignorant white people coming to the realization that their beloved Beyoncé is a black woman. The skit unfolded like a horror movie, culminating with the revelation that more celebrities – even Kerry Washington – were rumored to be black.
