Familiar sight: Redskins riding high heading into tough opponent
Starting center Mitch Morse will miss his second straight game, which puts Zach Fulton in the starting lineup in his spot.
The following week, everybody thought that the Oakland Raiders would run right through the Redskins on Sunday night.
The Washington Redskins sustained another injury to a key starter when star cornerback Josh Norman left the team’s Monday night game against the Kansas City Chiefs with a rib injury.
It’s a hard type of environment to play in, one that has haunted Kirk Cousins at times in the past.
In order for the Redskins to get the win on Monday night, they must find a way to play with the same defensive aggressiveness that they displayed against Oakland last Sunday night. The next game it resulted from having a lead and throwing the ball well, the sort of recipe they’d love every week. They also have a 8-3-1 SU in their last 12 games away.
Could the Redskins have tight end Jordan Reed return from injury? With the high-safety scheme that they run, they like to force plays to the inside to their athletic linebackers. Usually, they receive the ball on crossing patterns and more intermediate routes. They allowed the Chiefs to stop them in a couple of situations, and Cousins was under pressure in a couple of instances. There were a couple of things that the Patriots did effectively versus the Chiefs. This would be flawless for Chris Thompson. The biggest name on the injured list is Eric Berry of course. Peters and the others know the backlash they’ll face. The Chiefs are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games, 6-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. I believe the defense will do its part in containing the Chiefs, but the offense will struggle against that vaunted defense.
Here’s the deal when it comes to Washington in years past, they have won big before in recent years, but they would never amount to anything for the status and culture of the team.
Safety D.J. Swearinger, defensive linemen Matt Ioannidis and Terrell McClain; and OLB Preston Smith all had sacks on Chiefs QB Alex Smith… which is wonderful.
The anthem will be performed by the Kansas City Symphony led by Music Director Michael Stern. Smith has also not thrown an interception this season. This great performance had everybody surprised and definitely gave fans some much needed hope and confidence moving forward.
We end Week Four with what might be the best game on the schedule.
Cousins ended up with 14 completions on 24 pass attempts, 220 yards and two touchdowns. But Brown & Co. have not faced a challenge like Hunt. Houston has four sacks in three games for the Chiefs and has terrorized NFC opponents with 23 sacks in 22 career games. The Redskins should be aware of him at all times, particularly when he is lined up inside the numbers.
The Chiefs ride into this Week 4 matchup boasting the NFL’s 3 best scoring offense. And he was one of just three players who recorded at least 150 total yards and three touchdowns.
Washington earlier lost running back Rob Kelley (ankle).
