Family of Laquan McDonald to Speak for First Time Since Mayor’s Apology
Chicago musician Chance the Rapper made a reference to the police shooting of Laquan McDonald during a performance on “Saturday Night Live”.
More than 400 demonstrators chanting “16 shots and a cover-up” marched here December 6 as part of nearly daily protests against the police killing of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald, efforts of other cops at the scene to falsify their accounts and the city government’s fight to cover up the killing.
“Dreads doesn’t mean terrible”, said Hunter, referring to McDonald’s hair style.
Smith said neither Murphy nor the second sheriff’s responder, Officer Jeff Pasqua, witnessed the moment of the shooting.
Overall, Emanuel received a 56 percent disapproval rating from Chicagoans, while 67 percent of Hispanics disapproved of his job performance, according to the Aldertrack/DNAinfo/WGN Radio poll conducted on Tuesday.
McDonald was shot and killed October 20, 2014, by Chicago cop Jason Van Dyke.
The city negotiated a $5 million settlement with the family. McCarthy saw the video of McDonald’s shooting within days of the young man’s death, so he knew Van Dyke’s version of events were false.
Champion insisted to guest host Peter Alexander that Chicago police are receiving too much of the city’s budget and their funding should instead be invested in “black futures” and community initiatives she believes are a necessity.
Also on Monday, the city released a 2012 video of officers using a stun gun and dragging Philip Coleman, a 38-year-old who had been taken into custody after allegedly attacking his mother.
The family has stayed largely out of the spotlight since the video was released November 24, but about a dozen of them stood behind Hunter.
Meanwhile, State Representative LaShawn Ford, a Chicago Democrat, filed a bill on Wednesday in Springfield to allow for the recall of Emanuel.
Hey it’s only been a day since the last awful news about Chicago governance and police corruption, so here’s a little more. Alvarez blamed the delay on the complexities of investigating a police shooting. The newly named head of the city’s Independent Police Review Authority, Sharon Fairley, said the inspector general’s involvement was important for “public confidence”.
The pastor of Chicago’s Grace Memorial Baptist Church has planned a Friday news conference to discuss the Laquan McDonald case.
“I am going to continue to be Cook County State’s Attorney, and there’s no way that I would ever even consider resigning”, Alvarez said. Emanuel apologized this week.
