Family Says Alleged Gunman Suffered From Depression
A police report said he told a Chattanooga officer he also was with friends who had been smoking marijuana.
A Kuwait-born man who shot and killed five service members in Tennessee was first treated by a child psychiatrist for depression when he was 12 or 13 years old, a family representative said. “It grieves us beyond belief to know that his pain found its expression in this heinous act of violence”, the statement read.
In May 2013, Abdulazeez lost his job at a nuclear power plant in Ohio due to a failed drug test, federal officials reportedly said. A sailor wounded in the attack died Saturday. They have been identified as Lance Cpl.
A troubled profile that includes drug abuse and a history of depression emerged this weekend in Tennessee, as relatives and people close to the man accused of murdering five service members there began piecing together what may have motivated the killings.
The FBI is heading a “national security investigation” into the shooting, according to Attorney General Loretta Lynch.
The Army’s top officer says security at military recruiting and reserve centers will be reviewed, but it’s too early to say whether the facilities should have security guards or other increased protection.

The shooting has jarred the city of 168,000, where the Islamic Society of Greater Chattanooga condemned the attack and canceled its end-of-Ramadan Eid al-Fitr celebrations out of respect for the victims.
The proceedings were preliminary, and Abdulazeez’s father, Youssuf Saed, was never charged with a crime. The friend has said he initially did not think much of the text, but admits it might be a clue into Thursday’s shooting. He said he thought nothing of the text at the time, but now wonders if it was a hint at Thursday’s attack. One of the sources said authorities don’t know whether Abdulazeez visited the gun range for recreational purposes or to prepare for the attack. Abdulazeez, who had at least three guns plus a vest to carry extra ammunition, engaged in a firefight with Chattanooga officers, authorities told NBC News.
