Fan throws back homer ball at Yankee Stadium, hits player
The red-hot Blue Jays kept the good times rolling Sunday in New York, topping the Yankees 2-0 while effectively sweeping the Bronx Bombers in the process.
The July trading deadline came and passed for the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Yankees as did the complexion for the American League East divisional title.
Said Rodriguez, “We definitely took a punch this weekend”. The Yankees have not scored since the second inning of Friday night’s game.
He added, “It’s not our first three-game losing streak of the season, so we gotta bounce back”. We had a very good season so far. We’ve had a tremendous team this whole year and obviously just got a little better. “Our confidence is pretty high and we’re all enjoying the run”. “We took the scenic route”, Duffey said. This was a Yankees team that, twice in ’99, had scored as many as 21 runs in a game. All the Yankees have is an injured Dustin Ackley, acquired from Seattle. Three relievers combined on 2 2/3 scoreless innings and when Roberto Osuna recorded his 10th save in 11 opportunities, the Blue Jays had their ninth sweep of any series in New York but first since May 22-25, 2003, when Roy Halladay, Kelvim Escobar, Cory Lidle and Doug Davis were the winning pitchers. Another strong Marco Estrada start plus Josh Donaldson and Bautista homers led the way.
It also marked the first time since May 12-13, 1999, against the Los Angeles Angels that New York were blanked in consecutive games and the first time since April 28-29, 1992, against Texas the Yankees were held to three hits or less in consecutive games. “I think they were probably saying I suck, I think”. After Bautista connected against Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka and launched his 26th homer of the season off the facade of the second deck in left field to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead, a fan sitting in the stands fired the ball back on the field and struck Gardner directly in the back of his head.
FOX Sports does not see how the move benefits Toronto because they are now one of the hottest teams in baseball. They were a second place team with World Series intentions. “We just played good baseball”. He walked four, but allowed just one run and three hits. The top of the order isn’t producing. 208 in August.
Then in the top of the ninth, Mark Teixeira reached into the stands near the Yankees dugout to try to catch a popup by Chris Colabello and after he couldn’t come up with it, a fan ran over him in an attempt to get the ball.
For now, the Yankees must trust their veteran leadership and experience, and turn things around quickly against the Indians. If those trades were their way of telling the rest of the league to be on notice, the first two games of this series have been the proverbial mic drop. The offense never got going on two hits and a trio of free passes that saw Torii Hunter hit a sacrifice fly that plated Brian Dozier. They can’t continue to go a combined 0-for-14, as they did on Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Jays, meanwhile, look like a sudden juggernaut.
