Fans fight ahead of New York derby
Around 20 supporters fought outside a gastropub in New York prior to the two side’s first ever “derby” match in the MLS. The Red Bulls’ front office had slashed two-thirds of rival New York City FC’s traveling supporters, from their initial 1,500 down to just 500, in hopes of keeping crowd control and avoiding trouble.
It was the Red Bulls’ third win in three games against their crosstown rivals, who entered the league this season as an expansion team, and also move Jesse Marsch’s men back into second-place in the Eastern Conference, having taken 36 points from their 22 matches.
“The stadium was incredible”, said Red Bulls goal keeper Luis Robles to Fox Sports 1 after the game “The stadium was pumping”.

After goals from Bradley Wright-Phillips and Felipe Martins gave the Red Bulls victory, they tweeted: “Three matches”.
New York Red Bulls will be without Chris Duvall and Ronald Zubar through injury.
“They came in with a lot of energy, and we weren’t prepared”. “We want to win this game for this team and for the fans and for everybody around the club and it’s important for us and when we lose for the third time against this team, it doesn’t feel too good”. “But after 15 or 20 minutes, we had the rest of the game”, [Kljestan] said.
For NYCFC coach Jason Kreis, it was about two things – missed early opportunities and questionable calls by the officials.
“I do think those guys wanted to prove a point”.
Frank Lampard started his first game for New York City on Sunday night as they lost to the New York Red Bulls, while for his teammate Andrea Pirlo it was yet another appearance stateside.
Not only were they on the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline – they were also magnificently trolled by Red Bulls fans in the stands.
In other Saturday fixtures, the Impact host DC United, Houston Dynamo take on San Jose Earthquakes and Columbus Crew travel to Colorado Rapids.
Both teams created some quality chances. It was something I have never seen before to say the least.
