Fans Gather In New York City To Honor US Women’s Soccer Team
“USA! U.S.!” spectators shouted as floats carrying the 23 winners passed through a swirling hail of confetti.
That will be the chant heard ’round the city today.
“I only shared a field with her a couple times”.
Tens of thousands cheered on the history-making US women’s World Cup team.
America’s national soccer team defeated Japan on Sunday, July 5, to win the country its third Women’s World Cup title.
About 10 minutes later, with bagpipers leading the way, the parade was finally underway. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a fellow Democrat who has been publicly at odds with Mr.de Blasio, attended the parade, though the two men stood on different floats.
The players could be seen taking selfies and photos of the crowd. Most of the route is lined with tall office buildings on both sides, allowing workers to toss scraps of paper on the celebrants below.
The US women’s World Cup team stands on floats during a ticker tape parade in New York, Friday, July 10, 2015. The team is the first women’s squad to receive a New York City ticker tape parade, although the city has honored individual women, such as Olympic athletes and Amelia Earhart.
There is a major discrepancy in how much money Federation Internationale de Football Association awards to the teams in the Women’s World Cup, a $15 million total allotment, compared to the Men’s World Cup allotment of $576 million.
Originally, the Canyon of Heroes was meant to celebrate exceptional world leaders, heroes, and athletes. “It’s awesome what this team did to really bring this entire nation together – not just for women’s soccer but soccer in general”. John Glenn and his fellow crew members of the US space shuttle Discovery.
“To be a part of the ticker-tape parade, what an honour”. The 2015 team will have its own legacy. The 91-ers and 99-ers covered that. “All you need is a ball and a little place to run and pass the ball”, said Allen LaVenture, Syracuse Silver Knights Sales and Marketing Vice President. “Young girls have to have dreams and believe in those dreams in order to make them happen”.
“I think it’s important the girls have role models”, he said. “So thank you guys for all your support”. “WatchESPN will host live streaming along with local New York City news station websites, including ABC 7 and NBC 4″.
Abby delivered her gratitude for the honor.
The parade ended with dance and music outside City Hall, including a performance from hit musical Fun Home – a lesbian coming of age tale – that last month won the Tony Award for best musical.
Her friends, including Madison Dawkins, 18, wore red, white and blue hats and waved a cutout of USA standout midfielder Megan Rapinoe.
