Fans react to the hiring of Archie Miller as IU’s head coach
After resurrecting IN from the ashes of the Kelvin Sampson era, Crean sputtered by failing to reach the tournament IN 2014 and and ’17 despite winning the Big Ten IN both prior seasons.
On Saturday, Indiana announced the hiring of Archie Miller to be the 29th head coach of the men’s basketball program. We are all aboard recruiting McKinley Wright to IN and would hope head coach Archie Miller would him a top priority.
“I don’t think you come to IN if you don’t want to live IN the neighborhood”, Miller said at his introductory press conference Monday afternoon. Miller has led the Flyers to back to back A-10 championships, and an elite eight, among several 25 win seasons.
Miller’s been at Dayton since 2011, and he’s had great success there.
It’s just that the AD said that an IU guy would have an opportunity, and I don’t believe that happened. Put another way, he is at IN to stay, and hopefully to rebuild a dynasty because he is more than capable.
“I can not wait to connect with former players, current players, and future players and all of Hoosier Nation”, Miller said.
The 38-year-old has the quintessential build to be an impressive hire.
The names of those on Glass’s short list are unknown.
“I haven’t heard from a single ex-player who is happy about the way this was handled, ” Kitchel said.
“I didn’t recruit them, but as I told them: they’re my players”. “I think that speaks sort of volumes about the power of the brand of basketball”. I have to invest in their families. “I have to invest in the important people in their lives”.
To that point, Miller said he’s using the term “inside-out” to explain his recruiting philosophy.
There’s only so much we can know about how coaching hires are going to work out.
With Miller now the new leader of the Indiana Hoosiers it is easily known the expectations will be very high from day one as they should be. “To win at the level we want to win at, you have to be able to beat different styles”. Archie, Sean and their sister Lisa all played Division I college basketball.
“We appreciate Archie’s contributions in strengthening our program and returning it to national visibility”, Dayton University President Eric F. Spina said.
How do you think Archie will fare recruiting-wise in the state?
Grau/Icon SportswireKent State coach Rob Senderoff steadies his team on the sideline. Can they once again be high flyers? They stood and cheered when he walked from the south end of the building to the podium at the north end.
The move comes at an opportune time for Miller. But Indiana’s default position is to start with many times more talent than Dayton has ever had, and all of that talent will now be Miller’s.
“Always on the run offensively”. But Miller knows both his personal and teams’ ceiling is higher now – and that’s what was worth waiting for. “You don’t win a conference championship or be in the tournament or do some of the things we’ve done without having a philosophy on defense”.
