“I believe they have the best plan for me”, Pipkins told Schad.
NOVEMBER 15: Head coach Kliff Kingsbury of the Texas Tech Red Raiders during the game against the Oklahoma Sooners on November 15, 2014 at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.
Pipkins, a former Michigan defensive lineman, told ESPN that he’ll play his final season of college football at Texas Tech in 2016 after sitting out the upcoming season due to NCAA transfer rules.
According to 247Sports’ Daniel Paulling, the Red Raiders will need some immediate help at defensive line next season, and Pipkins would have a great chance to become a starter when he becomes eligible.
If he had signed the medical scholarship at Michigan, Pipkins would have stayed on scholarship but would not have counted against the Wolverines’ 85-man scholarship limit. In three years at Michigan Pipkins had a torn knee ligament, a neck injury and multiple concussions. He said doctors have diagnosed him with arthritis in his knee, but the condition isn’t career-threatening.
Visiting Comerica Park on June 30 to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before a Tigers game, Harbaugh was asked about Pipkins’ desire to transfer and continue playing football.
The coach also denied Pipkins claims that other players were given a July 1 deadline to get healthy, or sign a medical hardship waiver.
“We don’t run off players”, Harbaugh said, to a group of reporters.
“I’ll speak for myself personally”, Harbaugh told MLive.com’s Nick Baumgardner. After Harbaugh took over, though, Pipkins said he was sent to a knee surgeon who said he shouldn’t play for six months, effectively sidelining him for what would be his senior season.
