Fast In-Flight Wi-Fi Is Coming For European Airline Passengers

ButInmarsat’s head of aviation Leo Mondale described the speeds offered by its partnership with Deutsche Telekom as “4G style speeds, in tens of megabits per second”, and will be “far faster” than those now provided by Gogo, according to FT. However, those flights will use Inmarsat’s Ka-band satellite technology.
The new service will be available on German airline Lufthansa’s flights from next year, and come to other airlines in 2017. Once the aircraft reaches 10,000 feet, the ground network will combine with satellite connectivity – the switching between satellite and ground will be automatically managed by the cabin systems, according to Inmarsat.
The satellite will interact with a broadband network on the ground that allows a range of coverage of more than 80km and “able to transmit data to the operating altitude of passenger planes and are flexible enough to deal with the speed of a plane”.
Known as the European Aviation Network, the service comprises of one S-band satellite utilising two 15MHz frequency bands, and 300 LTE ground stations to be built across the continent by Deutsche Telekom.
