Father: Lochte back in US; Rio judge orders passports held
Lochte, Bentz and Conger were all part of the 4×200 metres freestyle squad and Feigen participated in the 4x100m freestyle event.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the judge also issued a search warrant, and ordered police to seize the swimmers’ passports to keep them in the country.
He said he could not give the whereabouts of Lochte and Feigen for security reasons but that the USOC was cooperating with Brazilian authorities.
Bentz, reached Wednesday afternoon, said he was at the airport and could not talk.
Lochte and three other American swimmers are the center of a much-publicized incident in Rio this week. Blanc said that Feigen, however, told police that the athletes were surprised by multiple robbers but that only one was armed.
“Feigen told they were approached by more than one criminal, but only one had a gun”. But the story has raised questions here in Brazil, particularly after surveillance video emerged that purportedly shows the athletes returning to the Athletes Village on the morning in question, still in possession of their cellphones, watches, and other items that are often targeted by thieves.
Mr Lochte has since then changed his story, telling Today Show host Mr Lauer that the gun was “pointed in his direction” during the robbery – not put to his head. He was not asked by the Brazilian authorities to remain in Brazil for further investigation.
“I’m just happy he’s safe”, the elder Lochte said.
Police sources have told Reuters in recent days they have been unable to find the taxi driver or to corroborate any testimony provided by the swimmers.
Ostrow told NBC there is no question the robbery happened as Lochte described it.
According to a report on O Globo Web site, swimmers Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger were arrested and removed from a late-night homebound flight Wednesday in order that Brazilian federal police could interview them about the reported robbery, about which Brazilian police are suspicious.
He said the committee will continue to cooperate with Brazilian authorities.
Feigen, however, was quoted by the San Antonio Express-News as saying that he was still in Rio de Janeiro. Maddie Musselman and Kiley Neushul had two goals apiece for the USA, which is trying to become the first country to repeat as Olympic champions.
Initial reports regarding the robbery were confusing, with an International Olympic Committee spokesman first claiming the reports were “absolutely not true” at a press conference Sunday.
Jutanugarn, Kim tied for opening-round lead in golf: Inbee Park could tell right away Wednesday that this was not an ordinary golf tournament. He’s earned 12 career Olympic medals, standing tied as the second most-decorated swimmer behind Michael Phelps.
