Father of fallen Muslim soldier blasts Trump at convention
Honoring his son, Khizr Khan pulled a copy of the Constitution out of his suit pocket and offered to lend it to Trump.
“Like many immigrants, we came to this country empty-handed”. And he challenged Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has proposed a ban on Muslim immigration, declaring that if Trump had his way, his son would never have “been in America”.
“If it was up to Donald Trump, he never would have been in America”, said Khizr Khan, whose son Humayun S.M. Khan, was killed by a vehicle bomb in Iraq in 2004. He was posthumously awarded a Bronze Star and Purple Heart. During the convention, he took the stage with his wife by his side and delivered one of the most damning speeches of the four-day convention.
“I wish to share with the rest of the world the value of equal dignity and liberty, a hallmark of American democracy”, he said.
Then he focused his attention on Trump. Has he even visited Arlington National Cemetery? Go look at the graves of fearless patriots who died defending the United States of America. “Go look at the graves of the courageous patriots who died defending America – you will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities”, he said. You’ll see all faiths, genders and ethnicities. You have sacrificed nothing and we cannot solve our problems by building walls and sowing division. “We can’t solve our problems by building walls and sowing division”. We are stronger together.
“Hillary Clinton was right when she called my son the best of America”, Khan said of his son, who was only 27 when he was killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in June 2004.
“I asked every patriot American, all Muslim immigrants, and all immigrants to not take this election lightly”, he said. And on Election Day, take the time to get out and vote.
“Vote for the healer”, Khan said, “not the divider”.
