Father of man killed after stabbing police dog also charged
Police shot and killed a man Sunday afternoon near the East Busway in Wilkinsburg after they said he stabbed a Port Authority police dog to death.
60, was jailed Monday after his arraignment on aggravated assault, prohibited offensive weapons, obstructing police and other charges.
He could not say what caused the officers to deploy their Tasers when they did and said the investigation was ongoing.
Porter says two officers are on administrative leave. According to the New York Daily News, Kelley Jr. lunged at officers with a knife, cutting one of them, before attempting to run away.
Police officers shot and killed the suspect in the incident, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. “Our thoughts and prayers are with K9 Aren’s partner Port Authority Police Officer Brian O’Malley and the entire Port Authority Police Department”. Kelley’s father was detained near the scene.
Port Authority officers raced Aren to the Pittsburgh Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center in Ohio Township immediately after the stabbing, and a few K-9 handlers gathered there.
Kelley Sr. was charged with possessing brass knuckles, but the complaint doesn’t specify whether he used them to strike the female officer. Knowing he had a knife, they tried to subdue him with a Taser, which didn’t work because of the suspect’s heavy coat.
He said authority and police officers chased the suspect along the transit busway that leads from downtown Pittsburgh into the city’s eastern suburbs.
WPXI reported police activity on Whitney Avenue, where the medical examiner said one person was dead.
An autopsy was scheduled for the younger Kelley on Monday.
Officers then released K9 Aren on the men, but the 5-year-old German shepherd was stabbed repeatedly. Rocco’s death also prompted state lawmakers to stiffen the maximum sentence for killing a police animal from seven to 10 years. Aren was not wearing a protective vest at the time.
