Father of slain California woman urges immigration changes
“Our family realized the complexity of immigration laws, however we feel strongly that some legislation should be discussed, enacted or changed to take these undocumented immigrants felons off our streets for good”, Jim Steinle said at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday.
Kathryn “Kate” Steinle, 32, was killed July 1 as she and her father strolled along the popular pier. While federal officials asked the city not to release him, and to at least inform the federal government if he were released, the city ignored both requests and let him go.
Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, the man charged with Steinle’s murder, had seven prior felony convictions in the US and was deported to Mexico five separate times.
ICE also released 36,000 illegals with criminal records who were in deportation hearings that year, the senator said. Her last words to her father were “Help me, Dad”.
Grassley has invited the head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as well as the director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to testify Tuesday after members of the Steinle family have had a chance to address the senators.
His family, he said, would be proud to see Kate’s name affiliated with legislation that puts an end to the practice of allowing states and counties to flout federal immigration detainer requests. But Jeh Johnson, the secretary of Homeland Security, told the House judiciary committee
“If every time a police vehicle drove by and folks in a certain neighborhood thought they are looking for undocumented people, those folks are less likely to step up and cooperate with police to find real wrongdoers, real criminals”, Durbin said. Immigration continues to be a heated subject in the United States. His sister was in college. “Josh never came home from school that day”. “Thank you to Mr. Trump for getting a message out about the nation in two minutes”, Wilkerson said. In Los Angeles and across the country, local authorities are deciding to what degree they should participate in ICE’s new Priority Enforcement Program. “I urge you not to wait until it’s your child or grandchild”. In the aftermath of the San Francisco tragedy, from the politically correct bubble in which Princeton politicians operate, Mayor Liz Lempert doubled down on Princeton’s status as a “sanctuary city”. “The day she was killed, we were walking arm-in-arm on Pier 14 in San Francisco“, Steinle told the committee. “Somebody sitting in Washington doesn’t know the details of how to do policing in San Jose or San Francisco or Chicago”, she said. The city passed a resolution three years ago calling itself an “immigrant friendly” city. Blocking funding for “sanctuary cities”. That would be a mistake, wrote a group of immigration rights advocates led by the National Immigration Law Center and United We Dream. Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., introduced the “Enforce the Law for Sanctuary Cities Act” the week after Steinle’s death. “These reactionary policy proposals are focused on heavy-handed, enforcement-only approaches despite the fact that studies show that deportation-only policies do not reduce crime rates”. Perhaps that’s why some places are in such a hurry to assure us that they are most certainly not a sanctuary city. “I believe that the most effective way to work with jurisdictions, particularly the larger ones, is through a cooperative effort with a program that removes the legal and political controversy”.
