Father, son die after fall through thin ice on lake
David Michael Lyons, 30, and his son Jackson were about 10 feet from the shore when they broke through the ice of Alderman Lake, about 40 miles northwest of Detroit, on Monday. They were pronounced dead after being rushed to Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital, a nearby hospital. They were in the water for less than an hour. A spokesman from the Highland Township Fire Department said both were wearing snowmobile suits when they went into the water. Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said they think they were actually heading back to land when the ice broke.
The man said he believes his grandson fell through the ice and that his son went in to save the boy. They were underwater for about 8 minutes, and rescuers were unable to revive them. “Our thoughts are with the family during this unthinkable time”.
This warning was prompted by the death of a father and son in Highland Township. He often talked about how much he loved ice fishing with his son and now everyone is talking about how much they loved them.
Local temperatures Monday were in the mid-30s to low 40s and authorities say with such mild temperatures, no ice should be considered safe. “It’s very important to know and follow guidelines to determine how ice looks and feels so that your day of ice fishing or snowmobiling is enjoyable and safe”. He said they weren’t wearing life preservers.
