Favre steps down from Gladbach post
Favre guided Gladbach to third place in the Bundesliga last season, but he resigned on Sunday after five consecutive league losses to start the campaign. “I do not have the feeling anymore that I am the flawless coach for Borussia Moenchengladbach”.
Having walked away from Dortmund at the end of last season to take a self-imposed coaching sabbatical, Klopp is weighing up his options after winning the German league titles in 2011 and 2012.
“I was privileged to lead Borussia from near-relegation to the Champions League”, Favre wrote in his statement.
Now he believes that the “time has come to make a change” and that he is no longer “the ideal coach for Borussia Mönchengladbach”.
However the team have endured a nightmare start with Saturday’s 1-0 at home reverse to Cologne their fifth successive league defeat.
Andre Schubert, coach of the club’s reserve team, has been appointed on a temporary basis until a permanent successor can be found.
“Only Lucien Favre can really judge the situation and draw his conclusions”, added Hitzfeld.
However, Favre has been through his fair share of rough times at the club.
The Bundesliga club turned down Favre’s resignation on Sunday but their director of sport Max Eberl admitted at a press conference on Monday that his reign is now over.
Obviously this has come as a huge shock to the club.
“We have talked about this all day and rejected his offer to resign, because we were of the opinion that we could succeed together, but then he went out on his own (and announced his resignation)”.
Leroy Sane’s 53rd-minute goal was enough to leave Stuttgart still without a point from its first five games of the season, despite attempting 26 shots on goal.
