FBI Director Says “Nation States” are Biggest Threat to Cyber Security
“I need you to wire me money”, Comey told a crowd at Boston College for a cyber security conference, telling them the people who use devices in our increasingly interconnected world are the weakest link in the defenses against cyber criminals.
The editorial continues, “It follows that the targets of the hacking methods, and the prime beneficiaries of their release, will be Islamic State terrorists, North Korean bombmakers, Iranian, Chinese and Russian spies, and other USA adversaries”.
But as noteworthy during the discussion were the topics that did not surface. In the speech, he did classify nations, as opposed to hacking syndicates and activist groups, as the top cyber threats, naming Russian Federation as one such country.
Nor did he address the alleged Russian hacking during the election, Wikileaks’ recent dump of Central Intelligence Agency documents, or Trump’s tweets that Obama tapped Trump Tower during the election season. To great disappointment, Comey announced that he will be pulling out of his prior obligation due to “scheduling conflicts keeping him in Washington D.C.”, as reported by Paste Magazine.
Comey did not comment on President Trump’s recent claim that his phone was wiretapped under President Barack Obama’s justice department.
According to reports, Comey was apparently concerned Trump’s accusation that Trump Tower was wiretapped under Obama’s orders would make it seem like the Federal Bureau of Investigation had broken the law on his watch.
Hillary Clinton has blamed his decision to send a letter about her email scandal to Congress 11 days before the 2016 presidential election as one key reason for her loss at the polls.
Comey also said that he intends to serve the remainder of his 10-year term, telling the audience, “you’re stuck with me for about another six and a half years”. “We should never have to sacrifice one for the other”, Comey said.
Comey noted industry members are the primary targets of cyber attacks but majority of these organizations do not seek law enforcement support after a cyber breach. “That’s where the bad guys go”.
Comey added that he himself is a fan of privacy, especially when it comes to his Instagram account.
“There is no such thing as absolute privacy in America”, Comey said Wednesday.
