FBI Investigating Whether San Bernardino Shooter’s Mother Knew About Attack
Two suspects – Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik – in the December 2 mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.
President Barack Obama has vowed America “will not be terrorised” as the Islamic State (IS) group praised the couple behind the California mass shooting as “soldiers” of its caliphate.
While the attack was underway, the female shooter posted a pledge of allegiance to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on Facebook, three USA officials told CNN.
If that turned out to be the case, Obama said in a radio address yesterday, “it would underscore a threat we’ve been focused on for years, the danger of people succumbing to violent extremist ideologies”. US Attorney General Loretta Lynch said US authorities have no evidence that the shooters were part of a larger terrorism cell but were working with their counterparts overseas to gather information about their lives. There is no evidence yet that IS directed the attack or even knew the attackers.
The couple did not have any trouble with the law, nor were they on any list of potentially radicalized people.
Earlier this year Miski was in direct contact with the two terrorists who attacked a Mohammed cartoon contest in Garland, Texas.
Malik and Syed Farook killed 14 people Wednesday at a holiday party for his co-workers.
“Umm, shock. Disbelief”, said Sayed Farook’s sister Saira Khan.
Estranged relatives interviewed by Reuters in Karor Lal Esan, in Pakistan’s central Punjab province, said she and her father appeared to change their views while in Saudi Arabia.
Malik, 29, who is from Pakistan but had lived in Saudi Arabia, came to the U.S. last summer on a “fiancé” visa and later obtained a Green Card, U.S. officials have said.
The Facebook official, who was not allowed under corporate policy to be quoted by name, said the company discovered Malik’s post on Thursday, removed the profile from public view and reported its contents to law enforcement.
Farook, on the other hand, would have been required to prove that he and Malik had met in person at least once in the previous two years.
Enrique Marquez’s Riverside, CA home was searched today in the continuing investigation of the San Bernardino shooting 2015.
Former college classmates of Malik’s and others who knew her in Pakistan said that in recent years, she began dressing more conservatively – including wearing a traditional Muslim scarf that covered almost her entire face – and became more fervent in her faith.
A local depot of package delivery company UPS was evacuated on Friday and the bomb squad called in when a parcel addressed to the couple was found.
“The investigation so far has developed indications of radicalization of the killers and of potential inspiration of inspiration of foreign terrorist organizations”, FBI director James Comey.
They didn’t know he was busy with his wife building pipe bombs and stockpiling thousands of rounds of ammunition for the commando-style assault Wednesday on a gathering of Farook’s colleagues from San Bernardino County’s health department.
She spoke broken English and her primary language was Urdu, he said, adding, “She was very conservative”.
“Our brother … went to Saudi and since then he doesn’t care about anyone here”, Bibi said. Malik’s involvement as a women from Pakistan who arrived in the United States in 2014 to marry Farook will no doubt lead to new questions about migration and marriage in the USA, especially for women from developing countries looking to marry in the US.
The San Bernardino terror attack has struck a raw nerve in Washington, stoking debates over gun control laws and the Obama administration’s plan to accept Syrian refugees into the country.
